"Crossing" — Grand Canyon, Arizona, 2016 Fine Art Print — Roadside Series by Thomas Hoeffgen
They landed a small plane on the side of the road. Nobody was around. The canyon stretched in every direction, red and ancient and indifferent. One of the crew stepped out and walked across the highway — long dark coat, unhurried stride, shadow stretched long behind him on the asphalt — and Hoeffgen clicked.
The double yellow lines run straight through the center of the frame like a spine. A steel bridge railing cuts a hard horizontal behind him. The red canyon walls rise in layers against a steel-blue sky. It is a landscape that has been mythologized a thousand times in film and photography, yet this frame feels discovered rather than composed — the kind of image that only happens when you arrive somewhere unexpected in a small plane and let the place tell you what to shoot.
This is the American West as it actually is: vast, cinematic, and completely empty. A movie set with no crew. A highway with no traffic. A man walking across the center line like he owns the continent.
From the Roadside series — a road trip from Chicago to Los Angeles along Route 66, shot on assignment for Timberland that evolved into a self-published book and PDN Photo Annual Award winner (2016).
