They finished the Grand Canyon from the air and brought the plane down on the edge of the desert. Ten seconds from touchdown. The shadow of the five-seater hit the sand before the wheels did.
No photograph prepares you for the Grand Canyon at low altitude — the scale of it, the color, the silence rushing up as you descend. This frame doesn't try to capture any of that. It just shows you the shadow: wings spread wide across the scrub and desert floor, the plane's silhouette sharp and absolute against the warm Arizona earth, the desert indifferent beneath it. The plane is invisible. Only its mark on the land remains.
It is the American Southwest as it actually feels from the air — enormous, ancient, and completely unbothered by your arrival.
