"Grounded" — Arizona, 2015 Fine Art Print — Roadside Series by Thomas Hoeffgen
It still looks ready to fly.
That's the thing about this one — the nose polished silver, the twin propellers perfectly symmetrical, wings level and wide, another aircraft parked just behind it like a wingman. Wheel chocks still in place. As if someone is coming back for it. As if someone just stepped away.
Nobody is coming back.
The Arizona desert does this — preserves what the rest of the world would let rust. The dry heat keeps the metal, keeps the shape, keeps the dignity. These aircraft didn't end up here broken. They ended up here whole, which is somehow harder to look at. A plane that looks like it could still take off, sitting on cracked tarmac in the middle of nowhere, the sun blazing white in the upper left corner of the sky, mountains flat and distant on the horizon.
Shot low and straight on, face to face — the way you'd look at something you respect.
From the Roadside series — a road trip from Chicago to Los Angeles along Route 66, shot on assignment for Timberland that evolved into a self-published book and PDN Photo Annual Award winner (2016).
Available as a museum-quality fine art print on premium archival paper, in multiple sizes. Signed by the artist.
