A hand-painted sign balances on two thin posts in the midday sun: Welcome to Sunset Stadium. Home of Zanaco F.C. A footballer in full kit lunges across the board, frozen mid-dribble, full of promise. Behind it, a whitewashed brick building bakes quietly in the heat. No one is here. The gates are shut. The dust is still.

This is the opening image of African Arenas — and it sets the tone for everything that follows. Hoeffgen spent several hours at Sunset Stadium that afternoon, drawn not by the game but by its absence. The architecture holds the story: the peeling paint, the shuttered doors, the hand-built brick border around the entrance, the corrugated roof catching the Zambian light. A stadium that has seen five league championships, standing empty at noon as if waiting for something just beyond the frame.

Shot on medium format, the image has the stillness and precision of architectural photography — yet it's charged with imagination. What happens behind those doors? Who painted that sign, and when? The simplicity of the scene makes room for everything the viewer brings to it.

African Arenas was published by Hatje Cantz (2010) and exhibited at the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Tampa Museum of Art. Hoeffgen is a recipient of the International Photography Award and the PDN Photo Annual Award.
