"Pre-Match Warm-Up, Lagos, Nigeria, 1999" Fine Art Print — African Arenas Series by Thomas Hoeffgen
A shirtless player stretches his arms overhead, his muscular back glistening with sweat, while teammates do the same behind him on a dusty Lagos pitch. Shot on film in 1999, this image captures the raw physical ritual of preparation — the quiet moment before the game begins — with Hoeffgen's signature directness and warmth.
Part of the acclaimed African Arenas series, a decade-long documentary project exploring football culture across Nigeria, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, and South Africa. The series was published as a monograph by Hatje Cantz (2010) and has been exhibited at institutions including the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Tampa Museum of Art. Hoeffgen is a recipient of the International Photography Award and the PDN Photo Annual Award.
This photograph is available as a museum-quality fine art print.
