"No Bench" — Abuja, Nigeria, 1999 Fine Art Print — African Arenas Series by Thomas Hoeffgen
Half time. A player sits directly on the sand, Adidas boots stretched toward the camera, worn white socks with red stripes, laces loose. Behind him, teammates wait in the haze — standing, watching, resting in the heat. There is no bench. There is no shelter. There is just the ground, the game, and the break between the two halves.
Hoeffgen placed his camera on the sand, judged the distance by eye, and shot blind. No viewfinder, no second chance — just instinct and trust in the moment. The result is an image with the gravity of a still life and the warmth of pure documentary: a boot as a portrait, a rest as a statement.
Shot on film in Abuja in 1999, this is one of the earliest images from the African Arenas project — made in the same week Hoeffgen first arrived in Nigeria and realized this would become a decade-long body of work.
African Arenas was published by Hatje Cantz (2010) and exhibited at the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Tampa Museum of Art. Hoeffgen is a recipient of the International Photography Award and the PDN Photo Annual Award.
