"The Captain" — Diepkloof, Soweto, South Africa, 2009 Fine Art Print — African Arenas Series by Thomas Hoeffgen
A young man stands alone on a sand pitch in Diepkloof, Soweto. He wears the South African flag as a jersey and Barcelona shorts. One hand is wrapped in white bandage. Two power pylons frame him symmetrically against a white sky, birds scattered across the wires above him like punctuation marks. He is not posing. He was playing a midweek pickup game when Hoeffgen asked him to stop for a moment.
He stopped. He stood. He looked directly into the lens with the complete, unhurried confidence of someone who knows exactly where he belongs.
Soweto in 2009 was a city on the edge of something enormous — months away from hosting the FIFA World Cup, the first ever held on African soil. The township that had been the heart of the anti-apartheid movement was about to become the center of the world's attention. That history lives in this frame without being stated: in the flag he wears, in the ground beneath his feet, in the pylons that power a city still finding its footing.
Shot on 35mm digital in Johannesburg — a city Hoeffgen describes as intensely intimidating — this image has the formal authority of a painted portrait and the immediacy of pure documentary.
African Arenas was published by Hatje Cantz (2010) and exhibited at the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Tampa Museum of Art. Hoeffgen is a recipient of the International Photography Award and the PDN Photo Annual Award.
