"Babylon" — Katutura, Namibia, 2007 Fine Art Print — African Arenas Series by Thomas Hoeffgen
Two teams in yellow and black-and-white stripes converge on a solitary red goalpost at the edge of the Namibian desert. The vast, pale earth stretches to distant mountains and the silhouette of a power plant on the horizon, dwarfing the players beneath an enormous, storm-diffused sky. The scene is both otherworldly and deeply human — a full match unfolding in what appears to be the middle of nowhere, with nothing but scrub brush, sand, and the game itself.
Shot on medium format digital with film grain added in post-production, the image has the weight and stillness of a landscape painting, yet pulses with motion and life. It is one of the defining images of the African Arenas series — a location Hoeffgen returned to multiple times, drawn back by its austere beauty and the way football transformed the barren terrain into an arena.
African Arenas was published as a monograph by Hatje Cantz (2010) and has been exhibited at the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Tampa Museum of Art. The series has been included in publications on the history of sport photography. Hoeffgen is a recipient of the International Photography Award and the PDN Photo Annual Award.
